LinkedIn Introduces “Twitter-Style Posts for Your Business”

Today, LinkedIn launches its new “Status Updates,” feature, introducing “Twitter-style posts for your business.” While the professional networking service has always allowed users to follow companies, the more than two million businesses with company pages can now post status updates to their followers.

The new feature will allow companies to post updates from their company overview page; share company announcements, product releases and other organizational news; directly engage with followers and their entire network; and optimize conversations by finding which updates are most engaging. Assigned administrators of company pages may use the Company Status Updates feature to post updates up to 500 characters in length to the “Overview” tab on their pages. “This is a great way to build engagement with customers, potential employees and prospects alike,” says Ryan Roslansky, director of product management at LinkedIn. “Nearly half of our members follow over 2 million Company Pages on LinkedIn.”

Following in Facebook’s footsteps, company status updates will also appear in its follower’s LinkedIn homepage news feeds. However, you don’t need to follow a company to see its updates – any LinkedIn user can see, like and comment on status updates, or share an update with friends from the company page.

LinkedIn’s latest feature signals the beginning of its transition from a professional network with static pages to a more interactive social site with dynamic entities, similar to Facebook Pages. LinkedIn created a quick, 54-second tutorial on its “Status Updates” feature, below:

f8 to Focus on New Music Platform

If you’re a Facebook junkie like we are, you’ve probably already logged on and noticed more changes to the social networking site. Like many prior revamps, the latest news feed redesign has gotten a cold reception. The new news feed now displays updates “you may have missed” based on how long you’ve been away. But while most social networking bloggers are reporting on the latest news feed redesign, we found some much more interesting Facebook news; or, at least, trustworthy rumors.

If you haven’t heard, some sources (including Om Malik, an award-winning journalist and well-known tech blogger) are claiming that Facebook and Spotify will become integrated, taking both popular social networking services to the next level. Rumors are claiming that there will be a new Music tab on the left side of the profile screen, next to the Photos, Friends and other tabs that already exist. The Music tab will take users to a new music dashboard on a redesigned profile page. Here, users will be able to listen to music from any of Facebook’s partner services, which will be officially announced at the f8 conference. Industry insiders believe the list will include Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, MOG, Vevo and some other, smaller players.

“Just like Comcast, Spotify already allows you to share the information about the song that you are listening to on Spotify with your Facebook friends,” said Malik, “but the next level of integration is going to be much deeper.” Facebook users will be able to recommend songs, see what their friends have been listening to and listen to any song with the click of a button. There also may be concert ticketing and other cool features.

Stay tuned for official announcements on Thursday, as the 5th annual f8 Developer Conference takes place at The Concourse at San Francisco Design Center. Each year at the f8 conference, Facebook’s ecosystem, which includes developers, partners, advertisers and rivals, anxiously awaits to hear what’s next. As the social network nears the billion-users mark (and also its goal of becoming the first trillion-dollar company), the value of Facebook marketing has never been more apparent. ‘Expected: Child’- Announce Your News with Facebook’s Newest Feature

In response to expectant parents creating “illegal” Facebook profiles for their in-utero offspring, Facebook recently added the “Expected: Child” option under “Family.” Rolled out sometime in the past week, parents-to-be can now announce their news through their own profile instead of signing up for a false account by choosing the minimum age of 13. Prior to this addition, Facebook had begun to delete the accounts claiming they were in violation of the social site’s terms of service.

To list your soon-to-be bundle of joy, simply update your “Friends and Family” section of your profile by adding “Expected: Child.” Here, parents can also add a photo, the name of the unborn child if they have one and the expected due date. While it may seem like a relatively mundane new feature that Facebook execs quietly introduced, it has sparked some controversy from critics who say that the newest feature encourages even more oversharing from an already social- media-obsessed society; they claim that adding your unborn child to your Facebook family tree can backfire if the pregnancy doesn’t go as planned. While the same can be said about declaring an engagement or wedding on Facebook that could end in a break-up or divorce, reactions proved to be much stronger when a potential new life was the subject. As soon as the news of the latest Facebook feature hit mainstream media, news outlets from the Huffington Post to CNN began dissecting the implications of publicly announcing your new pregnancy on the social network.

We think a TechCrunch.com writer summed it up best: “you can’t ask for a better customer acquisition strategy than getting them hooked while they’re still in the womb!” Whether or not you choose to break your baby news through Facebook’s newest feature is up to you, and we’re sure that most expectant parents are aware of the inherent potential consequences of choosing Facebook as their messenger.
