Social media marketing is a powerful method to showcase a company’s products or services to new audiences in various places. However, one must be careful not to sell immediately on social media, but focus on building a loyal following that leads to potential customers. By being informative and entertaining, social media is an effective way to connect with buyers. Here are a few ways to build that loyal following that leads to customer acquisition. The promise of increased traffic from the millions of social media users is enticing more and more companies to invest in Facebook and Twitter marketing. As the social networks continue to capture our attention, Facebook has come out with some impressive analytics detailing just how deep an impact the use of their site and social plugins has on generating direct traffic to websites; and with ever increasing revenue, Twitter makes a big move in purchasing its biggest third-party client.
Here is a look at some stats straight from Facebook, courtesy of Search Engine Land:
- The average media site integrated with Facebook has seen a 300% increase in referral traffic
- ABCNews.com, Washington Post and The Huffington Post are said to have more than doubled their referral traffic from Facebook since adding social plugins.
- Levi’s saw a 40 times increase in referral traffic from Facebook after implementing the Like button in April 2010 and has maintained those levels since.
- American Eagle added the Like button next to every product on their site and found Facebook referred visitors spent an average of 57% more money than non-Facebook referred visitors
- Like buttons get 3 to 5 times more clicks if: versions that show thumbnails of friends are used, they allow people to add comments, if they appear at both the top and bottom of articles and near visual content (like videos or graphics)
Since many established companies are skeptical of the real potential ROI of Facebook marketing, these stats will undoubtedly reassure those in charge that it’s a worthy investment. But what about Twitter? How can 140 characters really drive traffic? While we’ve yet to see as comprehensive a list of stats as Facebook has recently provided, the rumors from Wall Street Journal and other reputable sources that Twitter would buy Tweetdeck have proved true, as the social messaging service acquired the third-party application for a cool $40 million. This proves that Twitter has the power (and financial capability as a result) to persuade.

As popular micro-blogging site Twitter propels forward, it is being groomed and tweaked to fit the needs and preferences of its dynamic user base. Recent changes include improvements to Twitter search function, and the addition of a prominent featured user section. Twitter ascended rapidly to become the third-largest online social networking service, and is showing that it is remaining dedicated by constantly evaluating and evolving its forum.
Prioritizing search has been a smart move for Twitter. People search daily, many multiple times daily for information, products, and services. For this reason, providing a convenient and functional search option is a great way to cater to Twitter users. Twitter users also tend to be frequent tweeters, so access to a search bar along with the Twitter platform is a perfect match for tweeters searching for information. Twitter has expanded its search bar, shrinking the Twitter logo at the top slightly.
The changes were made with a new search text-entry box positioned at the top right of the site. The revamped Twitter search will boast the capacity to search for tweets that match not just the search query word, but to return relevant discussion about the query. Watch out Google. Many Twitter users are unlikely to notice the small tweaks and changes rolling out, as a large portion of tweeters use the service via stand-alone apps developed by third-party companies, such as Hootsuite and TweetDeck.

Oprah’s first tweet increased Twitter traffic by 43%… yes… it happened (this according to Hitwise web tracker). Twitter can thank Oprah’s tweetership for an estimated million new users joining post-broadcast. The self-propagating social networking craze is twitching its way to the twip-top, one tweeting celeb at a time.
Twitter is a digital pulse with the ability to serve as many things to many tweeps. Users have the capacity to choose which people and companies to follow, essentially molding their very own news reels. The obsession over Tweeting on Twitter becomes apparent when all of the bursts, insights, advice, random musings and complaints are updated, a lot, and lobbed at users at a bamboozling pace.
Those opposed to Twitter cite an overabundance of technological tools in an already overflowing toolbox. Torn by the tech-savvy transitions, these poor individuals are new to and intimidated by Facebook, Myspace, YouTube and perhaps found transitioning from their prehistoric desktops to laptops threatening. For these users, I recommend tweet tools designed to minimize noise, such as TweetDeck and Nambu. Technology continues to evolve and excite, to tweet or not to tweet, that is the question.
