With over 70 million professionals on LinkedIn, the social media networking platform features a tool that gives members the ability to ‘follow’ companies. The feature works like a Facebook fan page, so by following a company on LinkedIn, you will get access to status updates such as recent hires and promotions, new job opportunities and company profile updates.
This feature improves communication between companies and the individuals following them, and can be an incredibly useful asset for job-seekers and Human Resource departments alike. To use the feature, simply click on the “Follow Company” link on the top right corner of the page. Or, you can follow a company from a person’s profile — just click on a company name and the option to follow that company will appear in the hover box. Followers of the company will then appear on a list with their name and profile.
In addition to the follow feature, LinkedIn provides key statistics about a company. The stats tell the size of the company, location, industry, annual revenue and the year it was founded. Depending on the size of the company, it may give information on the most common job titles there, the top schools employees have attended, their median age and gender percentages. Another interesting bit of information is the “Related Companies” section that names the career path for employees of that company, including where they have worked before and where they go after.
The “Follow Company” feature combined with key statistics give users (and any interested job seekers) a general feel for the company, a method to grow connections and to scope out the competition and a way for companies to expand their social media marketing campaigns.
