As we near the end of the year, it’s amazing to think of all the changes and advancements that have been made to social media, technology and search engines in 2010. Yahoo and Google have both revealed their annual top searches with Yahoo’s Year in Review 2010 and Google Zeitgeist 2010.
The Yahoo Year in Review features over 25 categories of Top 10 most searched for topics. And for the first time this year, Yahoo has included top searches in 16 countries other than the United States. From global events to sporting games and celebrities, the Top 10 lists indicate what the hottest topics were this past year. The Top Overall Searches on Yahoo were the BP oil spill topping the list, followed by the World Cup, Miley Cyrus, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and iPhone. See the Year in Review for lists such as Top Survivor Stories (i.e. Chilean miners), Natural Disasters, Good Sports and Most Searched for Politicians.
Google Zeitgeist has created an interactive world map that shows popularity of searches both on a timeline and in different areas of the globe. The Zeitgeist features Top 10 lists as well as Fastest Falling topics of the year in different categories. The Fastest Rising in Consumer Products were the iPad, iPhone 4, Nokia 5530 and the HTC Evo 4G. Top searches in the news were Haiti, Besiktas, Chile, earthquake, Lady Gaga and iPhone 4. “Based on the aggregation of billions of search queries people typed into Google this year, Zeitgeist captures the spirit of 2010,” says the Google site. What better way to capture the year in a snapshot?
