Zuckerberg Advises Eighth Graders to Overcome “I Can’t”

As the recession rages on and the gap between the rich and the poor widens even further, many us of find ourselves wondering what separates those that succeed from those who struggle. Push aside all of your pre-existing notions about the brand of millionaires that cheat their way to the top – we’re referring to the self-made successes we admire for their genuine hard work and dedication. Though controversy has plagued Mark Zuckerberg from the very moment Facebook caught fire, we cannot deny his natural brilliance or the years of hard work and devotion to developing the world’s most pervasive social network.

Our beliefs, morals and values are developed when we’re kids, forever shaping who we will become as adults. While most of us found our eighth grade graduation forgettable, the students at Belle Haven Community School in Menlo Park, California (the new site for Facebook’s headquarters) were fortunate enough to have Zuckerberg (or “Zuckerman,” as the principal introduced him…) as their speaker. The theme of his speech was how to overcome the defeating attitude of “I can’t.” Here are the highlights:

  1. Everything that’s worth doing is actually pretty hard and takes a lot of work. “It’s not about a single moment of inspiration or brilliance, it’s about years and years of hard work and practice before you get there.”
  2. Focus on building great friendships and people that you trust. “A lot of the things that you guys are going to try to do are hard, and you need people around you who you trust and who trust you and who are going to encourage you to do that.” No one ever does it alone.
  3. Do what you love. “You can set your mind to a lot of different things, and you can overcome things that you don’t like doing, but it’s a lot easier to focus on challenges that you actually really do enjoy doing.” It takes on a lot more purpose.
