About a month ago, we broke down the differences between Groupon and Facebook Deals, and detailed several seeming advantages Deals had over the reigning savings giant. But after four months of testing in a handful of cities, Facebook quietly announced that it is killing the Facebook Deals service.
Facebook announced the pilot program for Facebook Deals in April 2011, offering online deals and discounts from local businesses. The social network giant organized a small sales team that arranged deals with local merchants in San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, Austin and Atlanta. After just four months, the product is now dead.
While the announcement may relieve some competitive pressure on industry leaders Groupon and LivingSocial, Facebook currently plans to keep the Check-In Deals product alive. “We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses. We remain committed to building products to help local businesses connect with people, like Ads, Pages, Sponsored Stories, and Check-in Deals. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses,” said a Facebook spokesperson in a statement. The Deals service will end in the coming weeks.
Facebook announced Check-In Deals in November of 2010 as a part of Facebook Places. The service works similarly to Foursquare – check in from local retailers, restaurants, entertainment venues and more through an app and receive individual discounts, share deals with your friends, earn rewards and secure donations for good causes.
To view your local check-in deals, go to the Facebook Check-In Deals page, or simply tap “Places” on your mobile phone and look for the yellow or green deals ticket next to your nearby places.
