As you know by now, Google+ has finally rolled out Pages for businesses. Now, users can connect with brands to show their pride and support for their favorite sports teams, TV shows, bands, designers and much more. But as social media teams quickly discovered, there are still plenty of issues the billion-dollar company needs to address before it can even hold a candle to Facebook Pages.
The chief complaint about the new Google+ Pages is that only one administrator is permitted for each account. This presents a pretty big problem for social media management teams. Pages also lacks a feature that allows account ownership to be transferred. As Robert Scoble, Rackspace tech evangelist and Google+’s self-proclaimed biggest fan, put it in his blog post, “I wish I had never heard of Google+’s brand pages” – “If I, as owner of the Rackspace Hosting account, were to die tonight for some reason, how would ownership get transferred over to someone else at Rackspace?”
Scoble has a healthy list of complaints about Google+’s new Fan Pages, and we can’t help but agree with most of them. Although Facebook wasn’t without similar issues when it debuted its Fan Pages, we expect a company like Google to do their homework before releasing a major new feature update like company pages. Even though Facebook rolls out redesigns several times in a year, much to the chagrin of many users, there is something to be said for the relative simplicity and ease of use of the majority of the new features. Those who have been experimenting with Google+’s Pages are still scratching their heads trying to figure out the nuances of the new option.
Regardless of the fact that Google+ could’ve taken a few more notes from Facebook, there is rarely a new social media feature on any network that avoids first-day criticism from the public.
