Passive location-based apps are a top trend seen at SXSW 2012. These apps offer location-based sharing, and also tell users about mutual friends in the area and offer ways to connect with those people. The concept has been around for a few years, but is just now gaining mainstream traction. The number one new app for this is Highlight, which connects people walking past each other on the street based on their social network relationships. Creator Paul Davison explains, “The way we find people has been terribly inefficient. We don’t realize how horrible it is because it’s always been that way.” Highlight will share information with others who have the app to make the process seamless. “It’s not about meeting people. It’s really about having something that surfaces information from people around you as you go,” says Davison.
Another top passive location app is Glancee, with a slightly different concept in that it’s meant for making connections with new people. Users can explore the profiles of those nearby and be notified when somebody has mutual friends or common interests. Arrived is a new app that automatically checks people in when they arrive at a location, so friends can be alerted of their presence.
