What is Web Design?

There are two basic aspects of any website found on the Internet. One is the front-end, or the presentation side, that users interact with visually. The other is the back-end, which includes information for non-human browsers. Web design is a general term referring to the various tasks involved in the production and maintenance of the front-end of websites. It involves the use of technologies and web languages to create visually appealing and user-friendly web pages.

Technologies used for web design include but are not limited to:

  • Mark-up languages - HTML, XHTML and XML
  • Style sheet languages - CSS and XSL
  • Scripting languages - JavaScript, ActiveX, PHP, and ASP
  • Database technologies - MySQL and MSSQL
  • Multi-media technologies - Flash and Silverlight
  • HTML 5 - the newest specification of HTML, HTML 5 is easy to implement and includes added features. As the popularity of HTML 5 continues to grow, more and more browsers supporting it, including Opera, Safari and Microsoft Internet Explorer 8.

History of Web Design

Web design has a relatively recent history beginning with the development of the World Wide Web in the 1990s and the ensuing browser wars between Microsoft and Netscape that created new technologies in the field, such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), JavaScript and Dynamic HTML.

In 1996, Microsoft released the first browser capable of supporting style sheets and Hypertext Mark-up Language (HTML) tables for creating design layouts. However, early HTML websites were very limited in design options. The World Wide Web Consortium developed CSS to support presentation and layout, which improved web accessibility. In the same year, a simple version of Macromedia Flash was introduced to go beyond HTML and enable more freedom in web design.

What Makes for Good Web Page Design?

Web designers use shapes, lines, color, texture and content to create informative, engaging websites. In order to design a quality website, a lot of thought has to be given to the content, navigation, layout, color and fonts. Here are some thoughts to consider when designing your company website:

  • Not all browsers interpret HTML according to the same standards, so web designs can appear differently on different web browsers. A web designer must account for different monitor sizes, browsers and display settings to create attractive pages for all viewers. A web page must be dynamic enough to appear visually attractive on a range of browser sizes, while maintaining a layout static enough to support fixed-size components such as images.
  • A well-designed website should feature a consistent page layout for improved navigation. Also, avoid horizontal scrolling for improved usability.
  • In designing a visually appealing website, learn about your target market. Keep aesthetics in mind for designing a business website vs. a social media site. The overall design of your site should match the content.
