Website project management is the discipline of planning, organizing and managing resources to bring about the successful completion of specific website project goals and objectives.
The process begins with a discovery period, whereby the project team becomes familiar with the business model and operations of the client. Once the discovery phase is complete, strategic planning can begin. Strategic planning outlines the purpose and direction for the website. It can include a mission statement, marketing goals, competitor analysis, user requirements, branding strategy and the metrics used to measure project success. The planning phase is completed first and involves both the client and contractor teams.
Organizing all or some of these topics into a written project document (or documents) is next. Typical documents include analysis and design, specification, and usability and acceptance testing plans. After the documents have been created and signed off on by both parties, the project can then be broken down into tasks and mapped out over an established timeline.
